Paul Hilburn is a lifelong resident of the Carolinas and an avid promoter of cleaner air by burning less of everything. At home he keeps busy working on old tube amps, old archtops and even older mandolins and citterns. 

    His inspiration for the Indian Land Wars series came after reading Red Carolinians by James Chapman Milling and The Carolina Regulators by Richard Maxwell Brown.  Both historical non-fiction books depicted an early Indian Society that was not all how most people today imagine.  The Creeks, Yamasees, Cherokees, Choctaws, Apalachees, Chickasaw, Catawba... all of them lived in houses and in towns - all agricultural based, and if not matriarchal at least matrilocal in nature.   The Clan women stuck together and had a lot of power - minding the fields and producing most of the food.  And all of those many small towns were as democratic as any of the Ancient Greeks.  One man one vote - no taxes - but it was the women who owned all the houses - as a rule.
